apple app store rejection Political Correctness on the Apple App Store?

According to an article over at Mac Observer, Apple has struck down an application that must have been to politically incorrect for their taste.  The app in question was illustrated by Tom Richmond who is a contributing artist for Mad magazine and has some really cute caricatures of every member of the U.S. Congress.

Here is an excerpt from the Apple rejection:

Thank you for submitting Bobble Rep – 111th Congress Edition to the App Store. We’ve reviewed Bobble Rep – 111th Congress Edition and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because it contains content that ridicules public figures and is in violation of Section 3.3.14 from the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement which states:

“Applications may be rejected if they contain content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, sounds, etc.) that in Apple’s reasonable judgement may be found objectionable, for example, materials that may be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory.”

Tom writes about the rejection on his blog and apparently was a bit perturbed by the strange rejection and the even more bizarre approval process for getting an app approved for the Apple App Store.

Personally, it’s my opinion that Apple is shooting themselves in the foot (face even) with the ridiculous number of legitimate apps that their draconian approval process is rejecting.

The thing that sets the iPhone apart from it’s competitors is the large volume of excellent apps, but if Apple continues down it’s on, they will drive people away from the platform and into Google’s “open source” arms.
